Diamonds and The Four C's: Color
How is a Diamond's Color Determined?
The system used to judge a diamond's color is one developed by
the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). A diamond is graded on
a scale from D to Z:
| DEF |
GHIJ |
KLM |
N to Z
|
| colorless |
near colorless |
faint yellow |
very light - light yellow |
Professionals rely on a set of master stones to guage a diamond's
color. Because the differences from one color grade to the next are
very difficult to detect, gemological laboratories almost always
have more than one expert assess a diamond's color.
How Does a Diamond's Color Affect Its Price?
Normally, the less color a diamond has, the higher its price.
This is because there's a higher worldwide demand and a lower
supply of natural, colorless diamonds. D color graded diamonds are
very rare; they command the highest price. The price difference
between a D and F diamond, both considered colorless on the scale,
may be as much as 20%.
The following chart provides you with an idea of how color
affects the price of a diamond with a VS2 clarity, and a
