Diamonds and The Four C's: Clarity

Carat, Color, Clarity & Cut
How is a Diamond's Clarity Determined?

Inclusions, or lack thereof, are what determines a diamond's clarity. Inclusions can be scratches, tiny flaws or trace minerals that can detract from the stone's beauty. Clarity can affect the sparkle, fire and brilliance of your diamond because the more and bigger the inclusions are, the more light is absorbed and not reflected back to your eyes thus taking away from the appearance of your diamond.

The GIA and AGSL use a detailed system of rules and standards to summarize the number, location, size, and type of inclusions present in a diamond to standardize measurement of a diamond's clarity:

      Diamond Clarity Scale

Flawless Diamonds No internal or external flaws
Internally Flawless (IF) Diamonds No internal flaws
VVS1, VVS2 Diamonds Very very slight inclusions. Very difficult to see under 10X
magnification, even for an expert.
VS1, VS2 Diamonds Very slight inclusions. Not typically visible to the unaided eye.
SI1, SI2 Diamonds Slightly included. Visible under 10X magnification and
possibly visible with the unaided eye.
I1, I2, I3 Diamonds Included. Eye visible and sometimes easy to see with the
naked eye.

How Does a Diamond's Clarity Affect Its Price?

As a rule of thumb, the greater the clarity, the more expensive your diamond will be. Both flawless and internally flawless diamonds are considered gorgeous but very rare and expensive diamonds! VVS1 and VVS2 Diamonds are considered to be excellent quality diamonds and are therefore priced accordingly. VS1 and VS2 Diamonds are less expensive than the VVS1 or VVS2 diamonds. SI1 and SI2 Diamonds are considered to be good value.

If your budget permits, Diamonds of Distinction recommends a diamond that has no inclusions visible to the unaided eye. This is also known as an eye clean diamond.
